Childhood is the age span ranging from birth to maturity. A pupa (Latin pupa for doll, pl: pupae or pupas) is the life stage of some insects undergoing transformation. The pupal stage is found only in holometabolous insects, those that undergo a complete metamorphosis, going through four life stages; embryo, larva, pupa and imago. In developmental psychology, childhood is divided up into the developmental stages of toddlerhood (learning to walk), early childhood (play age), middle childhood (school age), and adolescence (puberty through post-puberty).
It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master, conquering their fears while practicing adult roles, sometimes in conjunction with other children or adult caregivers. Undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to learn self-advocacy skills.
In the life of an insect the pupal stage follows the larval stage and precedes adulthood (imago). It is during the time of pupation that the adult structures of the insect are formed while the larval structures are broken down. Pupae are inactive, and usually sessile (not able to move about). They have a hard protective coating and often use camouflage to evade potential predators.
Although this sudden and rapid change from pupa to imago is often called metamorphosis, metamorphosis is really the whole series of changes that undergoes from birth to adult.
In the process of alchemy, the passing, metamorphosis, from one childhood stage(pupal) to reach maturity(imago) is symbolized by the color of gold(the Greek term χρυσός – chrysós) like the butterflies in the stage of a chrysalis or nympha where the skin/pupal color is a metallic gold coloration.
